By utilizing CO2 that would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere, the ACTL can help to significantly reduce carbon emissions and lower the environmental footprint of industry in Alberta.
Lowering Our Carbon Footprint
Ultra Low Carbon Fossil Fuels
When a typical barrel of Alberta crude oil is produced, refined and consumed, approximately 0.4 tonnes of CO₂ is emitted into the atmosphere. In contrast, each barrel of EOR oil produced from the Clive reservoir results in 0.3 to 0.7 tonnes of CO₂ being permanently sequestered, resulting in an ultra-low carbon fossil fuel source, and a unique and environmentally sustainable Green Oil development project.

ACTL will have enormous environmental and economic benefits for Alberta and allow for permanent storage of 14.6 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. At full capacity, emissions captured by the ACTL Project would represent the equivalent of removing all registered passenger vehicles in the Province of Alberta from the roads. A 2015 International Energy Agency (IEA) report concludes that the capacity exists for more CO₂ to be stored using CO₂ EOR than would be required to meet the goals agreed to at the Paris Climate Change Summit.

The ACTL pipeline will ship CO₂ volumes from Alberta’s Industrial Heartland north of Edmonton to the Clive oil processing and gas compression facility site located over 200 km south.
